File Managers

From awesome
Jump to: navigation, search

Occasionally, it's just easier to perform certain tasks using a GUI file manager. Both KDE and GNOME provide methods for doing this, but there's no built-in method for doing this in awesome.

Here are some lightweight file managers that don't require all of GNOME or KDE.

  • Thunar is a part of the Xfce desktop environment.
  • PCManFM is sometimes dubbed "Thunar with tabs", a quick and light graphical file manager, with experimental "true" desktop implementation support.
  • emelFM2 is a GTK+2 port of the good old original emelFM. Highly configurable, pretty much like its ancestor.
  • ROX is a small and fast file manager which can optionally manage the desktop background and panels.
  • mc GNU midnight commander, console based, but the mouse works too to some degree.
  • Vifm Vifm is a ncurses based file manager with vi like keybindings. If you use vi(m), vifm gives you complete keyboard control over your files without having to learn a new set of commands.
  • Xfe is small and very fast file manager and only requires the FOX library to be fully functional.
  • Ranger Console based, multicolumn filemanager with vim-bindings.
  • Gentoo Gentoo is a free file manager for Linux and other Unix-like computer systems created by Emil Brink. It has a very simple but effective ui and it's fast. Gentoo is written in C using the GTK+ toolkit
  • Sunflower Small and highly customizable twin-panel file manager using GTK2.
